From the Introduction

This volume is the product of the Seta Foundation at Washington Dc's second Young Scholars on Turkey (Ysot) Conference held in Washington, D.C. on February 5, 2013. The Ysot program organizes several events throughout the year, the highlight of which is the annual conference. Bringing together young scholars from the academic and policy worlds to the nation's capital, the program aims to foster meaningful and up-to-date research and ideas on Turkısh politics, history and foreign policy, and seeks to engage both academics and policy makers working on Turkey.

The majority of papers you will find in this volume were first presented at the Young Scholars on Turkey Conference in 2013, wich brought together over 100 participants in a daylong, lively exchange. As editors, we engaged our paper presenters and assisted them in transforming their presentationsa into articles for this publication.

The papers are multifaceted in the diverse themes and methodologies they present, but come together seamlessly to showcase the challenges facing Turkish foreign policy an us-turkey relations .We are proud to facilitate this kind of exchange between academics and the policy community which aims to challenge traditional frameworks and thingking on policy issues related to Turkey.
